Hey All! Dragan and I recently returned from Monaco where he was working on the Euro Draw 2014. For all you who, like me, don’t follow soccer….erm futebol….I think this is a draw where they pick the teams who will play against each other in the Champions League throughout Europe. I think. I did go, but mostly paid attention to the women and their fashion styles.
🙂 Also, I was sitting a few seats away from Cristiano Ronaldo and Manuel Neuer. Neurer is my favorite and extremely cute so I was distracted….who wouldn’t be. Also, I was looking at Dragan. ()
Anyway, Monaco was amazing and I was thrilled as I’ve always dreamed of the Mediterranean Sea. I used to thoroughly believe I was destined to be the next Grace Kelly…and I’m serious here…so I chose my clothing carefully, wanting to be my best each day.
I had NO IDEA what I was in for. lol. I swear everything I own felt not fancy enough for Monaco. I told Dragan I should have brought my evening gowns for a casual dinner! Wow. It’s a surreal world there; at least it was for me. I was overwhelmed but amazed. And I now have a list of new shoes I need….er….want. 🙂
So. We stayed at the Meridien Beach Plaza, which is the only hotel to have a private beach there. Amazing. You can check it out here. http://www.lemeridienmontecarlo.com
Upon my first morning, I went downstairs with my book and, knowing the UEFA guys were at it, looked forward to a glorious few days at the beach alone sipping cocktails and devouring books. Now, I am a fairly confident gal, but I really felt excessive intimidation that first day. Let’s just say the beautiful and rich were out to play!!! Not to be deterred though I did as a often do, and pretended to be more fabulous than I am, smiled and took myself down anyway, regretting the past few months of croissants and extra glasses of wine. 🙂
Now, here was my awakening to the reality of a world I have never been in. Since moving to Europe, I’ve been told several times that I look Russian, but often assumed it’s when I’m with Dragan, as he is from that part of the world and obviously looks like a powerful Russian mob boss or something. haha! Anyway, after being at the beach only 15 min I had 2 people come up and try to speak with me in Russian…..what?? I think, being an American, you begin to think of a person’s looks and ways of dressing like this: She’s from the South…..or..Def NYC….or….California girl….or the giant lump of …..she’s a European. We dont perceive in country terms but rather regions of the US. I think I look and dress very American but here the mindset is obviously, and to my great enjoyment, different. Anyway, quite enjoying myself, I gasped as I looked up and saw a most gorgeous girl walking down to the beach in a dramatic flowing, colorful piece. I swear, her level of beauty made my jaw drop and as they sat down a few seats from me…..I ever so nonchalantly pretended to read while watching them the rest of the day. It was entertaining to say the least as men paraded around and soon I noticed that there were a few groups of different beautiful and obviously Russian girls. Next, I started noticing how there were men approaching both sets of women (each in groups of two) and at one time the girls yelled at eachother in Russian. My intrigue grows….
Baffled, I brought this up at dinner that night and was told very casually, “oh, those girls are prostitutes.” WHAT. omg. I’m so naive. I guess these resorts in areas like this allow the “companies” to set up girls in the rooms for the availability of guests. Again, I’m so naive. I thought, but those girls are too pretty, and it makes me so sad that this is how they earn their money. But maybe 15K a week and Chanel Bags are a much better life for them…….C’est la vie, right?
Anyway, all that to say that 2 days later, I was all prettied up in a dress that probably wasn’t fancy or expensive enough, :-), and I went downstairs to wait for my friends. I was standing at the concierge desk, leaning to show my nonchalant confidence, when one of the doorman came up to me and said, “excuse me Miss….I assume you have an appointment with a gentleman at the hotel….do you have a room number or name”. WHAT. omg. Again…..WHAT. Not knowing what to say, I blurted out, “No, no….Je Suis American!” (I am an American) smiled and turned away. For the record, what I was wearing was not so outrageous. I don’t have a pic from that night but I wore it before on vacation with Natalie. See below.
I don’t think so…..you?
I laugh but now I find it funny that my only response was that I’m an American. As though that makes me immune to being a high end prostitute. lol. It’s so ridiculous. The funny thing is that I saw him the next day when walking with Dragan and he nodded to me and I thought that he probably felt justified b/c Dragan has that look about him you know…..big tall powerful Serbian man and I’m his blonde Russian prostitute. I wish now I had played into a bit and leaned into D and winked at the guy, but I didn’t. Don’t you agree about D?
Anyway, what an interesting perspective these experiences can give you. I’ve never really though “globally” before but I’m glad I have this opportunity now. Monaco is a fun fantasyland place if you will. There are Bentley Continental GT convertibles EVERYWHERE, driven by young and beautiful people, and I can imagine it would be easy to lose yourself there.
All that sillyness aside, it’s a fantastically pretty place to be and if you have a couple tens of millions of dollars, it’s worth investing in. Also, interesting fact……I was told b/c of Grace Kelly, Americans can go work and live there without a Visa….promising as there is no income tax. 🙂
If you find yourself there…we had amazing dinners at The Buddha Bar and Sass. Sass is a nightclub of sorts but a restaurant first and a great place for spotting celebrities as well as the ancient owner who places pictures of himself all over the menu. This is quite charming as he also walks around with his entourage of women 🙂 and speaks to all the guests sitting having a meal. The Fairmont hotel also has an amazing view for enjoying a glass of champagne.
Catch you later.
